Apprentice builders lay foundations for career in construction
Date of issue 5 March 2008
Young apprentices are laying the foundations of careers in the construction industry by building the college where they study. Six trainees from Winchmore Brickwork have finished building a new motor workshop at Hertford Regional College in Broxbourne as part of a three year Apprenticeship scheme. |

Campbell Weir, head of the construction, engineering and technology department at the college, said: “These lads are quite literally learning on the job. They spend one morning each week learning construction theory before putting it all into practice by building some fantastic new facilities for the college.”
Enfield-based Winchmore Brickwork began training apprentices with Hertford Regional College over five years ago when managing director Tony Yianni realised that there was not enough skilled labour available locally to meet the demand for construction work. The company has now successfully supported 10 young builders through their bricklaying Apprenticeships with a further 10 still currently studying.
Mr Yianni said: “It became clear to me a while ago that there was so much work coming up linked to housing growth in the region and the Olympics but that we just
wouldn’t be able to get enough labour to service the contracts. Now we’re reaping the rewards of our investment in training as we’ve got a 120-strong skilled workforce who are prepared to stick around because they can see we are committed to helping them get on |

Brickwork firm brightens up College workshop
Students from Hertford Regional College’s department of Construction, Engineering and Technology were all a glow this week as partnership firm Winchmore Brickwork donated 30 high visibility jackets. Winchmore Brickwork who are based in nearby Enfield Town, have been working with the college since 2005, sending young workers in on the apprenticeship programmes. Attendees to the College from Winchmore Brickwork have slowly increased over the years and the College now supports over 8 apprentices from the firm.

Winchmore Brickwork fully supports all of their apprentices by holding monthly apprentice meetings. These meetings are designed to monitor the apprentices’ progress and as a result the Enfield based firm have been put forward for the Employer of the Year Award by Hertford Regional College, a National Competition of employers, which support apprentices in the work place. Company Director Tony Yianni commented “Donating the Jackets to the College was a way of showing our commitment to the programme and helping us to form a bond with HRC. Working with the College is a great marriage which suits both parties.
It is our duty to the industry to help provide skilled workers and the reward is the feeling of putting something back into the industry and at the same time the College increases the students on its apprenticeship programmes”. Paul Rosewell (Programme area manager) at Hertford Regional College commented “Winchmore Brickwork fully support their apprentices, and they have a real desire to help young people gain a bricklaying qualification. The number of apprentices attending HRC has grown from 1 in Sept 05 to the current number of 8. Winchmore have also encouraged one apprentice to go on to do a level 3 qualification in bricklaying. We look forward to carrying on our partnership with Winchmore Brickwork and hope it is a partnership that will continue for many years to come”. |

Could it get any better?
‘Be paid to learn and gain on the job experience too’. That’s what Adrian Murray says. He studied ICA Level 1 Bricklaying at Hertford Regional College and then applied successfully to Winchmore Brickwork to join their apprenticeship scheme. He is now attending HRC to study NVQ level 2 Apprenticeship Bricklaying course and enjoys the support from WBL who are happy to pass on their knowledge too, to really help Adrian enjoy a really rewarding career. His aim is to become a foreman like the many that are helping him. WBL believe that their investment in apprenticeships today will enable them to provide the same levels of skill and attention to detail in the future, as they do today.
